Swakopmund - A Coastal Gem

Situated halfway between Etosha National Park and Sossusvlei, and in close proximity to the Skeleton Coast, the historical coastal town of Swakopmund is an excellent base to explore many of Namibia's attractions from.

Swakopmund is a picturesque, culturally rich town with historical colonial buildings characterised by German architecture. It is famous for its pristine beaches and sand dunes, and also offers a wide range of outdoor activities for adrenalin junkies, such as sand-boarding, quad-biking, and sky-diving, as well as hiking and horse-riding trails.

Swakopmund is Namibia's largest coastal town, which attracts holiday-makers from all over the country and further afield. It is easily accessible by road (car, minibus taxi, bus or tour bus), rail or air, and even by ship. Once in the town, public transport is lacking, but visitors can get around on foot or by hiring a bicycle.

There is plenty to see and do in and around Swakopmund. For those interested in history, the Swakopmund museum is a must-visit. Other attractions include the National Marine Aquarium of Namibia — the only aquarium in the country, as well as the town's famous landmark, the Swakopmund jetty — a great place to have lunch or to watch the sunset.

For the more adventurous, swap the touring bike for a fat bike and take a bike tour of the scenic coastal dunes, or opt for a desert tour on a camel or quad bike. For those who prefer the open skies, an aerial tour of the Swakopmund and the surrounding area offers a unique birds-eye perspective of the wonders below, as you soar above in the comfort of a light aircraft or helicopter.

Thrill seekers can swap this activity for skydiving instead — or why not take the plunge before or after your aerial tour? The local skydiving club offers 1-day skydiving training courses, tandem skydives with an instructor, or fun and beach jumps for more experienced skydivers.

Whether you want to take in the cultural delights of this quaint town, lie on the pristine beaches and soak up the sun, or opt for something more adventurous, Swakopmund offers something for everyone, and it's a great base from which to explore Namibia.
