The Nyae Nyae Conservancy, meaning “place without mountains, but rocky,” was established in 1998 to protect this fragile ecosystem. Spanning over one million hectares of pristine wilderness, it borders Botswana and connects to the Kaudom National Park in the north, with Sikereti marking the southern entrance. Together with Botswana’s adjacent wildlands, this region forms a vast, unfenced expanse of untouched nature—home to a few remaining San hunter-gatherers who continue to live as they have for millennia.
This seldom-seen corner of Namibia offers a true wilderness experience. Towering Baobab trees punctuate the flat terrain where the Dorsland Trekkers once paused on their journey north. Across the border, the Aha Hills and Tsodilo Hills beckon with ancient San rock art and archaeological treasures—pottery, iron, glass and shell beads, carved bone and stone tools dating back over 90,000 years. Further along the route, the Okavango Delta unfolds—a pulsing wetland wonder that spills across the Kalahari Desert in northern Botswana.
